Here so my wife can get her learner license.

Strategically getting that so I can go to a for profit driving school that can administer the driving part of the test today instead of waiting months for an appointment at the DMV. More money but way faster.

Didn’t know that for ages 18-24, the state requires not only a basic written test but another safety course talking about distracted driving and whatnot. I figured as much for under 18 but I guess not.

Good luck.

We moved recently. I said to my wife - we need to be first at DMV that opens at 8. We were there at 5 and there was a line... sad but true

How I got my Driver’s License in the (once) great state of California:

2003.

Winter break at USC. The day after Christmas. I had zero family in town or, for that matter, country.

I was tired of playing Need for Speed and midnight madness.

I decided to go for a “walk”. Walked 2.5 miles on a chilly afternoon right into the DMV. Grabbed a book. the Driver’s license reading material. Walked 2.5 miles back.

Complete reading the book. Play more NFS.

Walk to the DMV at 7 AM. Zero line. Score 36 / 36.

Appointment was available for driving test. Walked back to school. Researched driving schools. Got a school to bring along a car for driving test.

Did the driving test the same day.

Got Driver’s license.

PS: I was 22 when all this happened and had driven extensively in Australia / India / Europe for the last 6-7 years on manual transmission cars and the driving test was a breeze.

Did you spend the night in the parking lot?

My 15yo son is making noises about wanting to get his license. So I’ve been doing the research, and it’s a much more complicated process than when I got mine 35 years ago. From what I’ve learned, you can do the classroom part either online or through a school. I think we’re going to do it through a school, since he’ll probably listen to a teacher more than me. Good luck with the red tape.

That’s how it worked for me, too.

You should come to WA. It is all privatized and for-profit here now, and the situation on the roads resembles a developed world location less and less with each new day. Pay your fees, get a license.

It looks like a correctional facility. You sure you got the right address?

Good luck!

In MA the parent also has to take a class if they haven’t done one within the last 5 years.

Wow. That’s actually pretty good, but it would never fly in TX.

I think it still works that way in rural TX. I did my on-the-road in HS in a Chevy Chevette and a K Car. This would have been about 1982.

It’s not a full driver’s ed course, just a single refresher session of the classroom portion. The parent doesn’t need to redo their hours.

I guess the goal is to make sure the parent is teaching the kid the correct rules of the road, since the kid will spend most of their hours with a parent vs an instructor.

Makes sense. I’m sure there are many, many, many drivers who could use a refresher classroom course.

Interesting. I did most of it through the high school in Illinois, but I still had to take the road test at the DMV. Not that it was a big deal, the test was ridiculously easy.

we went to a little random school and did the written test and the Impact course on Saturday. Once we got the Learner’s License here, we went to another random school that performs the driving test the same day. She passed it and they gave us a sealed envelope to turn into DPS. We did and my wife now has her driver’s license (temporary paper thing). 3-4 weeks til her card arrives :]

I have been to DMVs in a few states. This is the slowest. Not even due to amount of people. Just inefficient. Go here to take a photo. That photo will be used to verify your face against the photo you will take for your drivers license. Why don’t you scan my drivers license and confirm what comes out looks close enough to what you scanned. Idiocy!

Things I learned from this post. Well, you’re married for one. And she’s between 18-24, so probably you are too. She didn’t have a driver’s license, which is something 16 year old me couldn’t fathom, much less 18-24 year old me. Young bastard.

I pass both portions of the test (at that time) on my 18th birthday lol. Passed it in my mom’s Expedition.

I’ll be 32 in May but my body and bones say they’re 42 lol. My wife is 20 as of Aug.

Good news to update, she passed the driving portion of the test!! Will make a post soon. Now I can sign her up for AutoX!!!
